Abstract submission is NOW CLOSED. 

Abstract outcomes will be advised in June 2019. 

We look forward to receiving a range of innovative, high quality abstracts and workshops. All abstracts must reflect the theme 'Making Tobacco Control a Priority' and consider the following requirements:

Presentation Format

Three types of original presentations will be welcomed at the Conference.

  • Research study: Describing the collection, analysis and interpretation of tobacco control research studies.
  • Program, policy or advocacy report: Describing the latest programs, policy or advocacy action.
  • Workshop: An interactive session that offers participants an opportunity to increase their skills or contribute to a developing outcome.

To assist reviewers in applying a consistent evaluation and selection process, please ensure you include the following prescribed headings in your abstract submission:

Presentation Type

  • Brief report: 4 minutes, 8 slides maximum, with group question and answer time to follow after several presentations.
  • Oral presentation: 12 minutes, with 3 minutes question and answer time to follow.
  • Workshop: 1 hour, including discussion time. Minimum of two speakers and maximum of five.

Please note: Preferences for presentation type will be considered but cannot be guaranteed. If your preferred presentation type is not accepted, you may be offered an alternate presentation type at the discretion of the review panel.


Word Limits

Title: maximum 20 words

Abstract word limit: 300 words

Presenting author bio: 100 words

During the submission process, authors can choose a theme from the below list that best suits their abstract.

Review and Evaluation Process

Abstracts will be reviewed and evaluated based on 3 criteria (criteria varies based on type of presentation). The reviewer will provide a score out of 5 for each criterion. Equal weighting will be applied for each criterion.

Research study (brief report or oral presentation)

  • Impact/Significance (How significant is the impact of the intervention or policy on the population of interest and where appropriate is this research generalisable to other populations?)
  • Scientific rigour (Is the study design/intervention appropriate and are the methods scientifically rigorous?)
  • Originality (Does the research use a new methodology, offer a novel solution or provide new insight to addressing an issue?)

Program, policy or advocacy report (brief report or oral presentation)

  • Impact/Significance (How significant is the program, policy or campaign on the population of interest, and where appropriate is this program, policy or campaign generalisable to other populations?)
  • Planned approach (Is the strategy and process of the program, policy or campaign well thought out, logical and sustainable?)
  • Originality (Is this a new or innovative approach, offer insight and/or a novel solution to addressing an issue?)

Workshop

  • Impact/Significance (How significant are the implications for practice (research, programs, policy or advocacy initiatives) in the field of interest?)
  • Structure (Is the structure of the workshop well thought out and is there a logical flow to the workshop topics?)
  • Participant outcomes (Do participant outcomes address the aim of the workshop?)


AV Requirements

There will be an opportunity to upload your presentation once your abstract has been accepted. All presentations must be submitted by the 11th of October 2019, 10 days prior to the conference. If you require your presentation to be edited once uploaded, please contact the Event Coordinator.
